At least five suspects arrested after camel torture incident in Sanghar – M Haris

At least five individuals were arrested in connection with the amputation of a camel’s leg in Sindh’s Sanghar district, as per media reports.

The incident occurred on June 14 in the Mundh Jamrao area, where the animal had wandered into an agricultural field.

According to reports, the camel’s entry into the field infuriated the landlord, who, along with his employees, resorted to violent measures. The group initially tortured the animal before using a sharp tool to sever its leg.

Footage of the brutal act quickly spread on social media, sparking widespread condemnation. Despite the public outcry, police initially registered a First Information Report (FIR) against unknown individuals rather than directly implicating the landlord.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ijaz confirmed the arrest of five suspects, with two reportedly confessing to the crime. Governor Sindh Kamran Tessori announced plans to provide two camels to the owner of the injured animal.

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Member of the National Assembly (MNA) Shazia Atta Marri stated that action had been taken regarding the “horrible and painful incident,” noting that the police had arrested those involved and filed an FIR. She also mentioned that both parties had reached a compromise, and the camel was receiving medical care.

Chief Minister Sindh Murad Ali Shah took serious notice of the incident, leading to further arrests. PPP’s Sharjeel Inam Memon confirmed the arrests and emphasised that, despite a compromise between the parties, the state had lodged the FIR due to the inhuman nature of the act.

The video of the incident, which showed the camel in severe distress, led to protests at the Sanghar Press Club. The Sindh CM directed authorities to ensure appropriate action against those responsible, and medical teams were dispatched to treat the injured animal.
